Drumstick buyer's guide
The short version of everything that matters when choosing sticks.
What do 5A, 5B, 7A and 2B mean?
The number roughly tracks thickness (lower number, thicker stick) and the letter tracks weight (A is lighter than B). 5A is the all-round middle; 7A is slimmer and lighter for quiet or fast playing; 5B and 2B are thicker and heavier for volume and power.
Taper: short or long?
The taper is where the stick narrows towards the tip. A long taper gives more flex and rebound (think Jazz Model). A short taper puts more weight up front for a heavier, punchier feel (think 2B 30 Days Life).
Tip shape and sound
- Acorn: full, fat tone with plenty of articulation (5A, 6A).
- Round: focused, clear note on cymbals (7A, 3A, 5D).
- Oval: warm and full-bodied (Rock Classic, Jazz Model).
- Barrel: punchy, defined attack (8B Be-bop).
- Teardrop: dark and rich (Funk Model).
Wood tip or nylon tip?
Wood tips give a warmer, natural sound. Nylon tips sound brighter on cymbals and never chip. Many of our models come in both.
Hickory or hornbeam?
Hickory is the classic: strong, shock-absorbing and forgiving. Hornbeam is a dense European hardwood that Pellwood has turned since day one; drummers who hit hard say it lasts noticeably longer.
What is the weight guarantee?
It covers our Premium sticks. Since 2009 Pellwood weighs and sorts every Premium piece of wood before it goes on the lathe, and each model is made from wood of its own density. So when you reorder your model, the new pair weighs the same as the last one, to 1g accuracy.
X-Line or Premium?
X-Line comes in packs of 4 pairs for £28, which works out at £7 a pair: our budget line, ideal if you get through sticks fast. X-Line wood isn't pre-weighed, but the two sticks in every pair are matched to within 2g. Premium is a single pair from our top wood selection, weight-guaranteed so every reorder feels the same.
